Six individuals competed in National History Day at the University of Southern Mississippi. Competitors choose to enter and compete as a group in five categories or as an individual in four categories.

National History Day is a year-long academic program focusing on historical research, interpretation, and creative expression for students. NHD is a nationwide competition for middle and high school students.

University of Southern Mississippi hosts the annual statewide contest. This year’s theme was “Conflict and Compromise in History.”

Abigail Musser, Anne Marie Ross, Soul Park, and Tyler Dickerson competed in the group documentary category. Their documentary, “In the Dark of Night: The Story of One Team’s Conflict with the Mississippi Government,” placed second and was presented with the Gulf South Award.

“We chose to make a documentary about the game of change and race relations in Mississippi during the late 1950s and early 1960s because we knew that we could compile primary and secondary sources that would allow us to effectively convey the significance of the game and how its impact can still be seen today,” Dickerson said.

The Gulf South Award is presented to the group with the best presentation of any category about Mississippi or history of the state in the Gulf South.

“We were honored to be awarded the Gulf South Award because it encompasses all entries not just those in the documentary category,” Dickerson said.

Dennis Lee and Kylie Headley competed in the individual research paper category. Dennis placed first.

Gavin Gilbert is the advisor of the National History Club at Starkville High.

“As they prepare for Nationals, I have referred some of them to other National History Day coordinators and judges. After we get feedback from them, we’ll make the necessary adjustments,” Gilbert said.

During the national competition, contestants will have the opportunity to win scholarships and other awards.

Tyler Dickerson, Abigail Musser, Soul Park, Anne Marie Ross, and Dennis Lee will attend the national competition in Maryland in June.
