The Yellow Jacket tennis team began their district play against Madison Central Tuesday, March 20, at home.

The Jackets fell short to the defending 6A State Champions Tuesday. Jackets lost all seven courts in straight sets to the Jaguars.

The Jackets have only won two district matches since Starkville athletics advanced to 6A in 2013. They defeated Northwest Rankin in 2014 and Callaway back-to-back in 2016 and 2017. The Jackets are hoping to change the outcome this season with a senior-led squad and veteran head coach, Anna Albritton.

“I am extremely happy with the leadership and playing level of our seniors along with the underclassmen…district play will be difficult due to the fact we are in ‘District of Death’ with Madison [Central] and Northwest Rankin,” Albritton said.

Senior Bryan Richey played boys’ doubles.

“We didn’t get the result we wanted as a team, but we took a lot of positives from this match and are now looking forward to Northwest Rankin,” Richey said.

This will not be the last time the Jackets will face Madison Central. The Jackets travel to Parham Bridges in Ridgeland where they will meet the Jaguars in the District tournament.

Calvin Richey plays boys’ doubles, like his older brother.

“When we face them again, we are going to give it our best effort and play some good tennis. We aren’t going to let them dictate the match, come out fighting, and give it our all,” the younger Richey said.

The Jackets continue their season March 27, hosting the Murrah Mustangs.
