The Homestead Education Center held an event on Saturday, September 8, called Homestead Days. Homestead Days provides citizens the opportunity to participate in activities and learn about types of living.
Participants took part in classes based on their interests.
Homestead days offered something for everyone from animal and gardening sessions, around the home sessions, to holistic childbirth sessions.
Homeschool participant, Olivia Artigues said, “This was my first time coming. My favorite part was the childbirth sessions.”
A variety of people spoke at the holistic childbirth sessions. At one session, Megan Huston spoke on baby wearing, the practice of using wraps and cloth to swaddle a baby next to the caretaker’s skin. At another session Charisse Cambell spoke on prepping for childbirth.
Starkville resident, Margaret Wilson said, “I really enjoyed composting and gardening. It was really informative and helpful.”
Speakers entertained and informed participants at the animal and gardening sessions, and the aroundthehome sessions. Catherine Schiller spoke about composting, in and around the home in the session Composting 101.
Other sessions included, Minimalism, a session by Shannon Vogues about simplifying the home, Surviving Tragedy on the Homestead, by Tommy Alderman of Alderman Farms, about how to handle stress and ways to stay calm in a stressful situation.
Vendors at Homestead Days sold crackers, lotions and soaps made from goat’s milk, herbal medicines and body care, as well as fruit trees.
Vendors included The Grain Elevator, Covenant Creek Farm, Sons and Moon and Southern Cultured Orchards and Nursery.
The Homestead Education Center will host a family hike led by Evan O’Donnell Sunday September 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. Hikers will learn about area vegetation this time of year while  getting some great exercise.
