Saturday, September 22, the Starkville High School cross-country boys’ and girls’ teams placed first at the MSU Horse Park. The girls took the lead with a total of 25 points, and the boys won the race with the final score of 18 points. The Jackets competed against eight different teams: New Hope, Eupora, Kosciusko, Choctaw County, Mississippi School for Math and Science, French Camp, and J.Z. George High School.

Caroline Mattox led the way for the Starkville girls with the time of 21:13, and for the Starkville boys Christian Leach cleared the path and placed first clocking in at 17:40.
Starkville cross-country team member Claire Potts loves the family aspect.
“We are like a family, we all support and cheer each other through the good and the bad races,” Potts said.

Team member Mathew Swiderski felt like he personally could have done better to help his team.
“I didn’t do too well. Several other guys met their personal record, but I lagged behind several people I beat in my last 5K, taking 30th place,” Swiderski said.
The weather is always a huge aspect at cross country meets but through the good and bad weather the race goes on. Senior runner Jason Roberson believes that the team did amazing during the conditions they had.
“The race Saturday was extremely hot, but in cross-country that is no excuse to not do your best. We train in all types of weather, so we were already prepared. As a team, we did awesome. The boys as well as the girls side took home first place. I am very proud of what my team has become, and I am looking forward to state,” Roberson said.

The Starkville High cross-country teams next meet is on Saturday, October 6, it is the MC Watson Ford Invitation in Clinton, MS.

Junior Sarah Bailey wrapped up the team’s performance with some profound words.
“No team is perfect, everyone needs improvement and the best way to do that is to practice and do your best.”
The Jacket XC is preparing daily to ensure improvement.
