The Starkville High cheerleaders held a Mini Cheer Camp on Friday, September 8, for kindergarten through sixth grade. They learned a cheer, chant and dance and how to stunt and jump. The mini cheerleaders performed at halftime during the SHS versus Provine game.

Coach Blackwell is the coach of the SHS Cheer squad.
“This was my third year holding Mini Cheer Camp. This camp is designed to teach basic skills to elementary students, to promote school spirit and to inspire students who want to be a cheerleader. The cheerleaders do a great job leaving a positive impact on the children. It gives children an idea about what Friday night lights feel like and what it is all about,” Blackwell said.

Sophomore cheerleader, Johannah Larson believes Mini Cheer Camp is a great experience for younger children.

“They [elementary students] get to be a real cheerleader for a few hours. The kids are actually really fun, and you feel like you have known them for way more than just a few hours,” Larson said.

Larson taught the dance to all the kids at camp. Seeing the smiles on the girls’ faces and being themselves when they are performing is her favorite part about Mini Cheer Camp.

Second grader Hart Rodgers regularly attends Mini Cheer Camp.
“I love going to Mini Cheer Camp. It is fun seeing my friends and being a cheerleader. My favorite part about Mini Cheer Camp is popsicle break, getting my photo taken, and when we get to dance to whatever music we want,” Rodgers said.

During popsicle break, the kids get their favorite color popsicle and their choice of tattoo. They also get their picture taken in front of a display during this time with a cheerleader and their friends. When the children are learning the dance, they get a break to freestyle dance to let out their energy.

According to Blackwell, Mini Cheer Camp has been a successful event and will continue to be held in the fall and spring.
