The Yellow Jacket football team played in their first playoff game Friday, November 10, against the South Panola Tigers. The Jackets won 37-0. The Jackets defeated the Tigers for the first time since 2001. In the last showdown, the 2014 South Panola team put the Jackets out of the playoffs in the third round.

Dreke Clark is a senior running back and the lead scorer on the team. “It’s crazy because I’m a senior and this is my last year playing high school ball. It feels good to have made it this far, but the ultimate goal is to get the golden ball. I think we have played well but there are still a lot of ways for us to improve,” Clark said.

Sophomore Luke Altmyer plays starting quarterback. “I think as a team we played well. We executed offensively at a high level throughout the game and I thought defensively we played outstanding,” Altmyer said.
Altmyer believes his team needs to clean up a few penalties.
“Preparing for Horn Lake this week our goal is to just be more physical all four quarters of the game. Last year I think our physicality was too much for them and I think if we can be more physical than them and play Starkville football we will be moving on to round three.”

Rufus Harvey is a junior wide receiver and 65 yards away from 1,000 yards for the season. “It feels good knowing that all of the work I have put into this season is paying off, and I still have another season to improve. I’m just going to come out and play to the best of my ability Friday,” Harvey said.
Harvey said at the South Panola game the team came out and played a good game but it can always be better. Harvey stressed the importance of preparation for this coming week. “This week we have to go into practice and make sure we focus on this week and not look ahead. As long as we keep the right mindset throughout the week, we should have no problem with Horn Lake. We are going to come out and play our brand of football and do what we do best.”

Ty Johnson is a senior Linebacker and agrees with Harvey.
“It feels good knowing that we are playing well my last year. We played good, but we need to work hard in practice this week for the game on Friday. We need to practice red-zone defense and winning one-on-ones, and we need to focus on stopping the run and visualize ourselves making plays so we can do it in the game,” Johnson said.

The Jackets will take on the Horn Lake Eagles in the second round of playoffs this Friday at Horn Lake. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
