The Starkville High School Jacket soccer team kicked off their first home game against the Kosciusko Whippets. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Whippets by a score of 4-0.
The Jackets are undefeated with a 6-0 record at this point of the season.
Peyton Rodgers is a junior goal keeper. He feels good about the season under new leadership,  JT Coward.
“With the new coaches I’m excited to see what they add and change from last year and see how I can benefit off of it, Rodgers said.
The Starkville High Boys lost a hefty number of seniors from last year.
Because we lost a lot of seniors from last year’s team, I’m excited to see some younger guys step up into more important roles,” Rodgers said.
The Jackets started the game off slow but picked up the pace as the game went on. Jackson Owen is a sophomore goalie who also plays a role in the field.
“We struggled with possession and really waiting on the open pass,” Owen said. The game was tied at zero until later in the first half when the Jackets scored off an on-goal.
“Our attack struggled with the Kosciusko’s defensive line, but we were able to break through and score,” Owen said.
The Jackets were able to score one more time before the half ended with a 2-0 score.
The Jackets were missing a key defensive back in Tanner Moore.
“The new back line adjusted to not having Tanner. The younger guys did a great job filling his absence,” Owen said.
Nestor Bonilla, senior mid-fielder, said this year’s team is small, but their technical ability makes up for that. The Jackets look forward to building off this win.
“There are always things you can build of off no matter if you win or lose,” Owen said.
The Jackets’ next game is Monday, November 26, versus Louisville at 7 p.m. at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
