The Starkville High School cheer team is preparing for their cheer competition to be held December 15 at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. The team has been working hard and preparing to compete against the other teams with the hope to place in the top spot. In the prior season the SHS cheer team competed in the small coed division, but this year they will be competing in the large coed division.

Last year the team placed 5th overall; now the team is working hard on ranking higher and working on the skills that need improvement.  Ashton Deweese is a sophomore who serves as a base in stunting.

“We have been working on this routine since August and hopefully we will be prepared to go back and do better than we did last year,” Deweese said.

The team has been working as hard as possible on all their skills needed to do well competition day. They have an elaborate piece with several aspects they need to work on before the competition.

Flyer Johannah Larson, a sophomore member of the squad, admits that the squad has been spending a majority of their nights after school working to perfect the routine.

“We have been preparing for the competition by stunting, tumbling, jumping, formation, and timing. I think we should be able to do our best because we have been working three to four nights a week after school,” Larson said.

The team is hoping to impress the judges with the difficulty level of their final pyramid. Coach John Jones has been working with the team on these hopefully impressive skills.

“Since summer, the cheerleading team has been rigorously preparing [for competition], working on stunts, tumbling, and the overall skill level. The team has been striving to develop their skills and talents to enhance the program,” Jones said.

This is Freshman Rileigh Schumacher first competition at Starkville High and she believes the team is going to do their best, try to come out on top and not to worry about other teams.

“I think we will do good at the upcoming competition and we shouldn’t worry about the other teams. No matter where we place, I know we have tried our hardest and did everything we could do,”  Schumacher said.
