Starkville High School track and cross country runner, Mary Beth Woodward signed a letter of intent with Mississippi State University Thursday, November 29.

Woodward is looking forward to the upcoming season at Mississippi State. “I’m excited to be a part of the team because I really like the girls. I also really like the facilities and coaches,” Woodward said.

Mary Beth will be running cross country under head coach, Houston Franks, who has coached at MSU for eight seasons. Mississippi State placed in the top 15 in several events this season under head coach Franks.

Mississippi State women’s track and field has also had successful previous seasons producing 19 national championships, 121 SEC champions, 252 All-American selections and 17 Olympians.

Woodward will continue to run throughout the school year and the upcoming summer. “I will run indoor and outdoor track at SHS and then I will have a training plan for the summer.”

Although Woodward has had success as a runner at Starkville High, she has only been on the team for two years. “I’ve run on and off since I was a kid, but I didn’t join a team until junior year,” Woodward said.

Mary Beth was encouraged by her friends to join the team, and they have continued to encourage her throughout the season.
”I’m so thankful for my friends encouraging me to run cross country last year. They made all of the hard workouts a little easier. They are always so encouraging, even when I was injured. I hate that I have to leave some of my teammates behind, but I’m looking forward to continue running at Mississippi State.”
