The Starkville High School Lady Jacket volleyball team travelled to Germantown Tuesday to compete in their third district game of the season. This was the first year that Germantown has been in Starkville’s district and seemed to be a big task for the Jackets with a lot of preparation in advance. The Jackets prepared for this significant match by playing the Mississippi State club volleyball team.

They started off the match with a competitive set that ended in a tough loss of 23-25. The Jackets tried new formations during the game to break the serve when they were down.

Brayland Furgeson, a junior middle hitter for the Jackets, led the team in blocks and kills last night.

Kyler Reeves, along with others, served aces throughout the game. The Jackets went on to win the second set 25-16 with Reeves serving three aces in a row.

Lady Jacket head coach Sierra Horel experienced something many coaches never see. Two of her sisters play on the Germantown team. Horel admits that was a challenge.
“It was a little rough just because they are family and that was my old highschool so it made it a little more special for the girls,” Horel said.

Throughout the game Horel repeated to the team: “This game just means more. This is the year of Starkville volleyball.”

During the third set, the Jackets were down 12-4, but they made a comeback to win the set 25-23. The match was very competitive with two out of the four sets coming down to last points.

The Jackets went on to win the fourth set 25-20 and the match 3-1. The SHS volleyball team is undefeated in their district and are currently district champs.

Kyler Reeves was proud that she could help her team win the match. “It was probably one of the best feelings to be able to go on the court, get my job done, and come out with a strong win. It was extremely humbling to be able to work with my teammates and coaches and be able to proudly state that SHS volleyball is on top.”

The Lady Jackets will go on to play other district contenders including Greenville and South Panola. The Jackets defeated South Panola earlier this season.
