STARKVILLE, Miss., January 24, 2020 Boys Varsity Jackets defeated the Greenville Hornets 89-52 remaining first in the district as the Jacket Nation came out and packed the stands

The Jackets have been on a winning streak since their loss against Pontotoc. Coltie Young led the way for the Jackets with 20 points, along with Forte Prater scoring 14 and Trey Jackson following with nine points.

Senior post player Trey Jackson discussed the importance of the game. “We moved onto 4-0 in the district, putting us in a better spot for playoffs,” Jackson said.

Young, a 6-foot-4 junior, scored more than 25 points earlier this season in the victory over Horn Lake, adding 14 against South Panola, 16 against Warren Central, and 23 against Tupelo. He’s averaging 20 points per game, a career best as a starting junior for the Jackets.

“My mentality coming into the game was to just play hard, work hard defensively, and continue to knock down shots,” Young said.

Jackson, highly competitive offensively and defensively, shows aggressiveness with the ball, yet still doesn’t have any offers to date. Although some colleges have shown interest.

“Honestly I try to tune out outside noise. I know there is always going to be doubters, but I think the best way to silence critics is the way we play,” Jackson said. “I understand what it means to be underrated and honestly that motivates me to work harder and prove everyone wrong.”

Assistant coach QuVarius Howard admitted there is always room for improvement on defense and knocking down shots.

“I’m proud of how they played together as a team,” Howard said. They defended well, they shared the ball, everybody was happy, and everyone scored. That’s all I ask out of them.”

The Jackets face conference opponent Germantown Friday, January 31, at 7 p.m. on the road.
