STARKVILLE, Miss. (October 29) — The Starkville football team hosted senior night against the Germantown Mavericks. The fans did not leave Yellow Jacket Stadium disappointed as the Jackets won their conference game against Germantown by a score of 35-7.
Enduring a loss last week against Oxford, the Yellow Jackets looked to bounce back against the Mavericks. Players were motivated on senior night with unique incentive to perform better.
“We had less mistakes in this game than the Oxford game,” Starkville quarterback Trey Petty said. Petty handed off the ball to Jordan Mitchell for a touchdown but there was a holding penalty called resulting in the touchdown to be reversed in early first quarter. The Jackets attempted another rushing touchdown from sophomore running back Tyler Nichols, which was successful. Nichols also scored another touchdown which saw the Jackets in the lead14-0 at the end of the first.
Junior defensive end Eric Thomas, Jr., who made five tackles and a sack assisted by Jordan Mitchell, is ready for the next game.
“We have to come back next week ready to get better and take another win. When it is time to go, we go hard,” Thomas said.
The Jackets dominated first half 21-7 in their lead over Mavericks.
The third quarter began with a rocky start as sophomore QB Trey Petty attempted to give the ball to sophomore Braylon Burnside, resulting in a fumble. The Jacket defense held Germantown from scoring on that possession following the turnover. After a scoreless third quarter, Senior running back Jordan Mitchell scored another Jacket touchdown in the fourth.
“We had a long hard week and it was cold. We had a chip on our shoulder from last week and had to bounce back,” Mitchell said after giving the Yellow Jackets two touchdowns and placing an immense amount of pressure on the Maverick quarterback as the team’s defensive end.
The Yellow Jackets ended the night with a successful pass from senior quarterback Jaquez Harris to wide receiver Chipper Hornburger, scoring another touchdown and concluding with a 35-7 victory.
The 8-1 Yellow Jackets take on the Grenada Chargers this Thursday on the road at 7 p.m.
