STARKVILLE, Miss.— The Jackets won their first district game of the season against the Oxford Chargers. The Jackets overtook the Chargers in an overtime game with the final score of 5-2.
The Jackets ended the first half of the game with a score of 0-2 with the Chargers scoring both goals within the last 10 minutes. Senior Ashton Staton tied the game during the second half. Staton scored both goals with two penalty kicks.
Senior Grant Smith plays center back for the Jackets. Smith believes the team struggled in the first half but made big adjustments to take back the game during the second half.
“We all agree we struggled in the first half. We simply weren’t ready to get out there and show people what Starkville Soccer is,” Smith said. “We came back out for the second half and made the mental adjustments necessary to get back in the game. We kept our composure and played our game.”
Both teams went into an overtime game due to a 2-2 tied score. Soren Voges-Haupt scored the third goal of the game during overtime. Joshua Eaves scored the fourth during the second half of overtime. Max Buehler scored the final goal of the game with less than two minutes on the clock during the second half of overtime.
Junior Brayden Green plays midfield for the Jackets. Green thinks the team made a great comeback, and the training leading up to it payed off.
“It’s a great feeling to come back from a 2-0 deficit and see the fight my team had to come back and win. It took a lot of fight and hard work,” Green said. Our coaches have been working with us all year to have the determination to play tough the whole game.”
The Jackets will compete in their second district game of the season against Grenada Friday, December 10 at 7 p.m at the Grenada High School stadium.
