Rising juniors and seniors at Starkville High School have a unique opportunity.

SHS, a national ACT testing location, provides testing dates every two months starting in February each year.

For this coming June 9 test date, SHS has been selected to take place in a trial test, but there is a catch.

Students who choose to take part in this free testing will not know whether they will be tested on paper or computer testing until they show up to the test site.

The purpose of this trial is to determine whether computer testing and paper testing measure the same academic skills regardless of how students take the test.

Also, beginning in the fall of 2018, international students will be able to take the ACT on the computer, so testing students beforehand helps the test providers identify and adjust if there are any issues with the testing.

The first 600 current sophomores and juniors to see Mrs. Amy Pate, the IT Specialist at Starkville High, will be given free vouchers for the test.

“If a student is interested in taking the test in June and participating in the trial, they should come find me. I am giving out vouchers on a first-come, first-served basis,” Pate said.

Even though the test is fully funded by the ACT, test scores will be college reportable and equivalent to all of those students taking the ACT under the normal standards.

“I think that everyone should take advantage of this opportunity for a free ACT. It’s a great opportunity to try to improve your ACT score without having a financial burden,” junior Maggie Fischer said.

Fischer will be participating in the trial.

Students interested should see Mrs. Pate immediately. Pate has already issued 300 vouchers.
